What is a Dental Crown?
Learning that you need dental treatment can be a little intimidating. A dental crown is a common treatment that is used to restore the size, shape, and function of a tooth. The process involves placing a cap over a damaged, decayed, or cracked tooth to protect it from further damage. A dental crown is also commonly used to complete certain treatments, such as a dental implant or root canal. We may recommend a dental crown to:
- Cover a tooth after a root canal or implant
- Cover a tooth that is misshapen or severely discolored
- Replace a tooth with a large filling
- Add strength to a tooth with little structure remaining
- Fix a cracked tooth
Treatment Details
It is important to note that a dental crown will not be completed in one office visit. During the first visit, any decay will be removed from the tooth, and it will be prepped to fit the permanent crown. An impression of your mouth and tooth is then taken to make the temporary and permanent crowns. At the end of the first appointment, a temporary crown is placed. When the permanent tooth is ready, a final appointment will be needed to place the tooth and ensure the proper fit and color match.
